Tennis Players

Hallamshire welcomes players of all standards but it is always nice to see top quality players. The following are some of the tennis players that play or train at Hallamshire; you can follow their progress through updates on our Twitter and Facebook page.

Jonny Marray - Wimbledon Doubles Champion 2012

Hallamshire member Jonny Marray, brother of Dave, one of our head coaches, made history in July 2012; becoming Wimbledon Doubles Champion with Danish partner Frederik Nielson. After starting the championships unseeded they beat the 2nd, 5th, 8th & 9th seeds on their way to becoming champions. Jonny became the first british player in a generation to win the title, the previous british winner was back in 1936 whilst Frederik's grandfather was the last Dane to reach a wimbledon final in the 1950s. Prior to Wimbledon Jonny had a doubles ranking of no. 76 but now stands at no. 21 in the world. On his return to Sheffield he recieved a hero's welcome here at Hallamshire and the following week Sheffield City Council laid on a Civic Reception for Jonny at the City hall. It is astounding to think our club has a wimbledon champion and a world squash champion, Nick Matthew, amongst our ranks.
