Alongside coaching groups and individuals, beginners to national standard, young and old, their specialisations span strength and conditioning training to sports psychology and outreach projects. Dave Marray, CCA - Head Tennis Coach
Head of Performance Tennis, Dave is an accomplished player, winning Yorkshire County titles as a junior. After gaining his initial coaching award in 1998 whilst studying Sports Science at the University of Sunderland, Dave coached a player to World Top 500 standard and worked for the LTA as a travelling Performance Coach working with Britain's top junior talent. Dave first worked at the Hallamshire in 1999 before touring with and coaching his brother Jonny Marray, a tour professional. Jonny has had the best year of his career so far when he became Wimbledon Doubles Champion with partner Frederik Neilson. Dave returned to the Hallamshire in 2004 and since has been head coach with Jason.
Jason Torpey, CCA - Head Tennis Coach
Head of Development Tennis, Jason played professional tennis for four years, representing England in the Four Nations Championships and gained a world doubles ranking. As a qualified coach for over 10 years, Jason has coached players to county titles and international standard play, including players at both Wimbledon and the US open. Alongside being based at the Hallamshire, he captains Yorkshire Junior teams and has taken players aged 10-20 on overseas trips to tournaments that have included Europe, Central America and the Far East.
Stuart played Tennis to county, regional and national level as a junior and was a County Junior champion. Between school and university he played in the French National Club League as well as competing in several qualifying events for World Ranking Satellite tournaments. Stuart has developed a wealth of coaching and teaching experience over the last 15 years including a previous stint at Hallamshire, a coaching and advisory role for the Malawian LTA, work with both Universities’ tennis teams and most recently as part of the coaching team at Graves Tennis Centre. He is a qualified PE teacher and works full time as a lecturer in PE, Youth Sport and Sport Development and Coaching at Sheffield Hallam University.
As a junior tennis player Jonny competed in national tournaments, represented his home county, Norfolk and achieved a rating of 3.2. Following successful junior tennis, Jonny went on to gain a masters degree in Sports and Exercise Science from Sheffield Hallam where he also captained the tennis 1st team. A specialist in the science of performance, he is certified strength and conditioning coach and performance enhancement and corrective exercise specialist.
Suzzi represented both her county and home club in Carlisle as a junior doubles player. After gaining her coaching qualifications she coached in her home town before spending 18 months in New York and New Jersey, USA, specialising as a mini tennis and multi-sport coach. Suzzi is an ABTO accredited referee and hopes to gain a qualification as a line umpire in the near future. Her main focus at the Hallamshire is mini tennis, adult development coaching and kids tennis parties.
Mike competes for Hallamshire in the Sheffield and District league and as a junior competed in several national junior championships. After studying Sports Technology at Sheffield Hallam (where he also captained the men's 1st team) followed by a masters in International Marketing Mike works full-time at a Sheffield firm and therefore coaches on weekends, focusing on individual coaching sessions.
Emma entered into the Hallamshire as a tennis member whilst studying Speech Science at the University of Sheffield where she also captained the 1st Ladies team. Throughout her junior and senior tennis she has represented her county and competed in many national junior championships. Emma focuses on her individuals coaching at the weekends whilst in the week she works full time for the NHS as a speech and language therapist.
