Hallamshire appoints a Director of Squash and Racketball section closed section open

Hallamshire appoints a Director of Squash and Racketball

The Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Neil Guirey as Director of Squash and Racketball at Hallamshire. Neil brings a wealth of knowledge and skill to the club, having enjoyed more than sixteen years of experience as Head Coach in both sports.

Having worked at Hallamshire previously as an assistant coach for 3 years, Neil is acutely aware of the Club's history, and its friendly, family centered atmosphere.

Neil is very passionate about ensuring that all players of all ages have the opportunity to reach their full potential in both Squash and Racketball and he welcomes the opportunity to further develop avenues of activity outside coaching such as leagues, competitions and social participation at the club.

He is as comfortable working with grass roots Squash and Racketball players as he is with the world’s best players and is very determined to keep enhancing the wonderful family ethos at Hallamshire. Neil recently celebrated his engagement to one of our members, Elaine Dean, and they are now looking forward to their wedding, which will take place next year.

Neil is currently studying for ESR’s High Performance Coaching Award and upon completion will be one of only eight coaches in the world to have achieved this qualification.

Neil really enjoys his role as Head Coach of The Nick Matthew Academy and is very excited to be able to link this partnership to Hallamshire to create an unrivalled top to bottom Squash and Racketball programme.

He is also extremely keen to develop the Outreach Programme to give more local school children the opportunity to enjoy playing Squash and Racketball. He intends to structure a clear player pathway for those who display a passion for the sport. He is also highly motivated to progress with Sport England’s “This Girl Can” Campaign by developing a programme of coaching, competition and social activity.

Neil is very aware of the importance of working closely with a strong team of coaches and recognises the pivotal roles that Alex Cutts and Sam Gardiner play and is looking forward to managing and mentoring their development at Hallamshire.

Neil is currently working his notice at Abbeydale Park Rackets and Fitness Club and we are looking forward to him joining Hallamshire ion the 1st July.

Message from the Board of Directors section closed section open

Message from the Board of Directors

The Board regrets to announce that the Business Manager, Matt Whitaker, will be leaving Hallamshire in the near future.

Matt has been running the operational side of Hallamshire for over five years. During this time he has been very instrumental in overseeing the many improvements in the club, in particular the building of a brand new squash court; the refurbishment of the seating area behind squash courts 5, 6, 7, and 8; new glass backs for courts 6 and 8; new floors, under floor heating and LED lights on all the squash courts; the replacement of six outdoor tennis court surfaces; LED lights on the tennis courts; the introduction of the on-line booking system with security gates; the development of a new website and last but not least, the very welcome refurbishment of the gym.

Matt would like to express his heartfelt appreciation to all the staff and members of the club. He would especially like to thank Rob Harrison who was Chair of the Board in the year of his appointment, Jean Peters (current Chair), Steve Illidge (Vice Chair and Company Secretary) and all board members who give a huge amount of unpaid time to enhance the club.

Matt would like to congratulate Dave Marray, Jason Torpey and all of the tennis coaches on receiving the very prestigious LTA Award for Yorkshire Tennis Club of The Year and thanks them for their hard work and dedication both in the club and outside in the local community.

He believes that the recent appointment of Neil Guirey as Director of Squash and Racketball with the present coaching team of Alex Cutts and Sam Gardiner will propel Hallamshire into becoming the leading Squash and Racketball club in the country.

Matt will be leaving Hallamshire during the course of the Summer to take up a new position as General Manager of Virgin Active’s Humberston Country Club which is thirty miles closer to his home near Hull.

The Board would like to thank Matt for his hard work and commitment to Hallamshire and wish him well in his future appointment.

Hedley calls time on Hallam Sports Shop section closed section open

Hedley calls time on Hallam Sports Shop

Hedley Matthew has had a huge involvement with the Hallamshire for almost four decades. He developed a passion for squash after he retired as a semi-professional footballer in his mid thirties. He started playing squash at Stocksbridge Sports Centre then was a member of both Queen’s Tower and Birley, before joining Hallamshire in in the early 80s.

It wasn’t long before he was invited to join the Squash Committee at the club and was later elected as Chairman of the Squash Committee, thus gaining membership as a Board Director. During this time he ran the Squash Summer League for many years and arranged various exhibition evenings featuring among others, Jonah Barrington.

Following a change in the management, Hedley, having recently retired from Head of Physical Education at High Storrs School, agreed to become “Caretaker Manager” for the club, a “temporary” position that lasted over five and a half years with him often working up to eighty hours per week!

Hedley’s passion and dedication to the game led to him starting a National League Squash Team at Hallamshire with the areas behind courts 5 and 6 crowded out with spectators keen to watch high quality squash.

Hedley’s “hands on” approach as Club Manager led him to organise massive functions in order to help improve the club’s finance including in 1999 The World Masters Squash Championships and in 2000 The Women’s World Team Championships. The latter involved the construction of a glass squash court on the indoor tennis courts, which turned out to be quite a challenge!

Hedley stepped down as manager in 2002 and took over the running of the club shop, Hallam Sports, which was later moved to a larger and more visible location at the front of the club. He was later re-elected to The Board and served a brief spell as club Chairman.

The club members have been extremely well looked after over the years with sports clothing, shoes, equipment and of course, an extremely popular racket stringing service. Members will really miss the personal touch and advice that has been offered over the years.

Hedley’s aim is to retire from the shop over the course of this Summer. He hopes to spend a lot more time playing squash and racketball and of course enjoying more fun time with his granddaughter, Charlotte.

Hedley would very much like to see the shop continue to offer a personal service to all the members and has asked the Board to initially explore the possible option of a club member taking over the business.

If anyone has an interest in taking over Hallam Sports, please have a chat with Hedley and then submit a formal proposal to the Board by Monday 1st June via email board@hallamshire.net or by letter via reception marked for the attention Kate Guest and Annette Illidge.

Hallamshire named Yorkshire LTA Tennis Club of the Year section closed section open

Hallamshire named Yorkshire LTA Tennis Club of the Year

The Club was delighted to have achieved this prestigious award for the first time. The Yorkshire LTA has well over 200 clubs and Hallamshire was chosen by the Yorkshire LTA Board.

The areas highlighted for our success were the facility improvements we have been able to put in place as part of our Sport England grant; the level of community activities driven by the Academy; the huge success of the Club's Great British Tennis Weekend Open Day earlier this year and the continuous, steady increase in the number of tennis members at the Club.  The Board, the Tennis Committee, the Coaches, the staff and the tennis members  have all contributed to the achievement of this fantastic award.
