Concern has been expressed recently regarding the availability of Courts for both Tennis and Squash and Racketball particularly at peak times.......
will wish to know that there are ongoing discussions between the Board, Club
Committees, Management and the respective Coaching teams in this regard and which
have already resulted in improved control of bookings for Sheffield Hallam University
(SHU) and the Club’s teams.
The Club shares a vision with Sport England, the
LTA and England Squash to not only grow but also retain participation in
tennis, squash and racketball at all levels. The Board considers that the route
to achieving this vision is by continuing to provide enhanced facilities and
access to professional coaches thereby allowing the opportunity for any member of whatever playing ability to achieve
their full potential in their chosen sport.
Members will know that the Club’s facilities have
seen a substantial improvement over the last five years. These improvements have
been largely as a result of the Club’s success in obtaining Grants from England
Squash and Sport England. The Club has a
continuing obligation under the terms of these Grants to promote and encourage
participation in our sports particularly for children and ladies. The Academy
and Apex coaching teams are pivotal in delivering excellent and varied programmes
both for Members and the wider community which help the Club achieve compliance
with the terms of the Grants.
Clearly a balance between coaching
programmes and Members’ demands needs to be achieved. The Club currently has
over 2,100 members - this is not always going to be an easy task. As a
preliminary step the Board has agreed in principle to a 50:50 split of court
availability across the five weekday evenings between Members and Coaches’ pre-booked
blocked courts for courses. Similar
arrangements will be applied to weekend daytime tennis and squash courts. Court
bookings and utilisation will continue to be closely monitored and, if
appropriate, further options will be considered.

'Car Park' Pete
Unfortunately Pete was knocked off his motorbike by a car whilst riding home from work on Wednesday evening.
He is suffering from several breaks and fractures, but thankfully there doesn't appear to be any serious head injury. I know that members will want to join me in wishing him a speedy recovery and I will keep you informed of his progress. In the meantime we shall try to find a temporary replacement for a couple of months.

History Of Hallamshire
Our club was founded in 1885 & has from what we know a most interesting and rich history.
After a discussion at a recent board meeting & questions from members, one of the current board members - Neil Widdowson has agreed to collate a full history of the Club. It is intended that a section of the website will then be created for the history to be displayed.
I`m sure many of you have snippets of information & old photos we can use.
Can anybody with any history and interesting facts about the club - including more recent times, please email this to Neil directly on firstname.lastname@example.org
