130th Anniversary Day with Roger Taylor Sunday 7th May 2017
7th May sees the 130th Anniversary of the official opening of the Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club and to celebrate this occasion we are holding several fun competitions and events all round the club, and we hope as many people as possible will get involved. Sign-up sheets for all the competitions are now up in reception and there should be something for everyone – even some HIIT sessions for gym members so don’t feel you have to be able to wield a racket to enjoy the day.
The Guest of Honour will be the great Roger Taylor MBE who was a member here until he went on the professional tour in the 60’s and 70’s where he reached the quarters at the French and semis at the Australian Open, 3 times semi-finalist at Wimbledon as well as back to back US Open doubles titles. He was also the first Davis Cup captain to pick a certain Jonny Marray to play for GB. We are going to honour his achievements by renaming Outdoor Court 1 as the Roger Taylor Court. There will be 2 Exhibition matches on the Roger Taylor Court starting at 4pm. One will be a Vets doubles featuring Roger himself, followed by another match featuring Jonny, Dave, Jason and Adil Shamasdin.
In the evening there will be a Q&A with Roger and at 8pm top Sheffield band The Zeroes will be playing in the bar. Food will be available all day from the bar plus a BBQ in the evening.
We have the following activities to enter -
Fancy Dress American Racketball Doubles Tournament 2pm start

The Opening Day of the ‘Sheffield & Hallamshire Lawn Tennis Club’ took place on 7th May 1887 with various tournaments starting at 2pm, none of which were completed because there were so many entrants. There were also around 150 spectators enjoying both the tennis and the band of the Hallamshire Rifles whose performance included a specially composed euphonium solo.
Our celebrations will also start at 2pm including the unveiling of an Honours Plaque to commemorate those who have been great servants of the club, and the renaming of Court 1 as the Roger Taylor court.
